"On the trail of the glaciers" in mostra a Torino

On the trail of the glaciers.

The scientific photography exhibition promoted by Ferrino on the occasion of its 150th anniversary since its foundation opens on March 11th at the MuseoMontagna in Turin.

The National Mountain Museum of Turin and Ferrino are pleased to announce the inauguration of the exhibition Sulle tracce dei glaciai. On the Trail of the Glaciers, Wednesday 11 March at 6 pm. A project balanced between photographic documentation and scientific research created by Fabiano Ventura, within which the two fields of investigation analyze and detect the effects of climate change on glacial masses over the last hundred years.

Mountain photographer and creator of the project, Ventura retraced the footsteps of the first photographers and explorers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries together with a team of researchers. The experience aimed to create a series of photographs that portray the historical views from the exact geographic point and in the same period of the year as those of the past. Visual comparison and scientific measurements in the field document the change and the unstoppable melting of the ice.

At Museomontagna Fabiano Ventura presents a selection of images relating to the six expeditions that make up the project On the Trails of the Glaciers . The photographic comparisons and backstage images tell the story of the first five expeditions of the project, held in the mountain ranges of Karakorum (2009), the Caucasus (2011), Alaska (2013), the Andes (2016) and the Himalayas (2018). For the occasion, there is also a preview selection of panoramic views of the Lys glacier on Monte Rosa taken in the summer of 2019. The exhibition is completed by an interactive video installation entitled “Walking through Time”, which allows visitors to interact with ancient and modern images.

The exhibition is organized as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Ferrino , a company that, as stated by CEO Anna Ferrino , is “deeply rooted in its territory. For this reason, we considered it important to strengthen the historic collaboration with the National Mountain Museum, offering visitors to the museum the opportunity to see in Turin a project that we have supported since its inception and that this summer will culminate in the 2020 Alps expedition”.

At the same time, the exhibition “Here is a fantastic world. Contemporary views on the archives of the Museomontagna, created as part of the Interreg-Alcotra iAlp project, will also be inaugurated. At 5 pm, the presentation of the portal dedicated to the interactive consultation of the collections of the Museomontagna and the Musée Alpin of Chamonix will take place:

Daniela Berta - Director of the National Mountain Museum of Turin

“The National Mountain Museum welcomes the project On the Trails of the Glaciers with great interest. The initiative shares Ferrino's attention to the changes that affect contemporary mountains and the culture of the high lands, sensitivities that bring the company closer to our institution, which is also about to celebrate 150 years (2024). The exhibition is part of a journey that began in 2018 with the Post Water and Under Water exhibitions and continued in 2019 with Tree Time, aimed at investigating the environmental emergencies that see the mountain as the protagonist at the beginning of this 21st century. On the Trails of the Glaciers goes in this direction. We therefore hope that the exhibition can contribute to conveying a new ecology of thought on global issues that inevitably go beyond our context of reference.”

Anna Ferrino - CEO Ferrino

“The choice to support Fabiano Ventura in his ambitious project was born for many reasons. The first is historical, as it is a work that cuts across the path of our company and that invites us to reflect on the importance of preserving the mountains that have accompanied this long history, allowing our Ferrino-equipped testimonials to take on extraordinary challenges and write fundamental pages in the history of mountaineering and exploration. The second reason is informative: for our company, whose products are aimed at those who love spending their free time in nature, it is essential to commit to raising awareness in the community on the importance of preserving the environment that surrounds us. This year the expedition will cross the Alps, bringing around Italy values in which we are the first to firmly believe: I like to think that the 2020 Alps expedition ideally starts right here from Turin, where our history began in 1870, and from a symbolic place for the history of Italian mountaineering such as the National Mountain Museum”.

Fabiano Ventura - Photographer

Ventuera is a landscape photographer specializing in environmental issues. After numerous participations in scientific, photographic and mountaineering expeditions, in the wildest and most remote places on Earth, since 2007 he has been involved in the project On the Trails of the Glaciers of which he is the creator and director. His sensitivity to the increasingly serious problem of climate change has led him in recent years to concentrate much of his activity on one goal: to spread knowledge of this phenomenon among the general public as much as possible. Thus, accompanied by researchers and directors, he went to photograph live the incredible transformations of the largest glaciers in the world and is disseminating the results of his work through the creation of exhibitions, conferences, educational programs, installations, documentaries.
